What safety precautions are taken for Wilderness Camp? [back to top]
While we are expecting no emergencies while at camp, we are taking every precaution necessary. All staff will have basic medical training and have passed a rigorous screening process by the camp director and Idaho Diabetes Youth Programs. The staff will include at least one physician with extensive backcountry training. The Forest Service, nearby hospital, and police know about our program and where we are located during the week.
What do I do if I have never done this before?[back to top]
Start walking, running or being active - NOW. You cannot expect to be successful if you've been a couch potato all year long. This activity will require physical endurance and will be strenuous. Specific training could include walking on an incline with a 40 pound backpack. For more recommendations, check out REI or Sierra Trading Post specialty links on backpacking preparations or call the Wilderness Camp Director..
What Are We Eating?[back to top]
Food and low goodies will be purchased by camp staff ahead of time and sorted between all of the participants. This week the food and cooking is shared in groups of 4-6. Don’t worry we’ll help! There is no need to bring extra goodies.
Do I have to be an experienced hiker to participate?[back to top]
No! There will be adequate supervision by experienced hikers and at least one medical staff at all times.
When does Wilderness Camp start and End?[back to top]
Wilderness Camp starts at 10am on Tuesday and ends at 10am on Sunday. Please arrange to pick up your camper.
When should campers arrive at Wilderness Camp?[back to top]
Please plan to arrive by 9am for registration though many activities will begin at 10am.
What special activities are planned?[back to top]
After the significant hike into the campsite we will have day hikes, swimming, geocaching (what's this? -- click here), reading a book, games, keeping a journal, survival training, and so much more!
Does my high school sport physical from this year count as my Wilderness Camp Physical?[back to top]
Yes! We require that a physical has been done within the past year for you to participate in the program. If you had one done by your physician for a sport activity earlier this year, that will count. After your phone interview you will be given further information as to where to send this form.
What should I bring to Wilderness Camp?[back to top]
Camp will provide participants with backpacks, tents, cooking equipment, food, toothpaste, low supplies, and shampoo for the week. Each individual participant is still responsible for bringing some of their own personal gear.
Please remember that all items you plan on bringing with you down the trail should be as light as possible. We will be doing a detailed pack check. If you bring along extra stuff, it will stay in the cars. Remember that your pack MUST include group gear which will add to the total weight.
