Frequently Asked Questions For HODIA Wilderness Camp
Click here to return to Wilderness Camp homepage.

What safety precautions are taken for Wilderness Camp? [back to top]
While we are expecting no emergencies while at camp, we are taking every precaution necessary. All staff for Wilderness Camp will be Wilderness Survival Trained, we will have a minimum of two medical staff, and there will be a 1:2 counselor to camper ratio. The Forest Service, nearby hospital, and police know about our program and where we are located during the week. We will have a satellite phone for emergency use.

What do I do if I have never done this before?[back to top]
We will go over many backpacking, survival and wilderness techniques the day you arrive at the trailhead and throughout the week. In regards to packing, there are many websites with helpful tips for backpacking preparation. Here are the websites for Sierra Trading Post and REI. Feel free to check them out to see what type of clothing is preferred for this trip! For more information, check out REI or Sierra Trading Post specialty links on backpacking preparations.

What Are We Eating?[back to top]
Food and low goodies will be purchased by camp staff ahead of time and sorted between all of the participants.  This week the food and cooking is shared in groups of 6. Don’t worry we’ll help! There is no need to bring extra goodies.

Do I have to be an experienced hiker to participate?[back to top]
No! We hike as a group throughout the week.

When does Wilderness Camp start and End?[back to top]
Wilderness Camp starts at 10am on Sunday and ends at 10am on Saturday. Please arrange to pick up your camper.

When should campers arrive at Wilderness Camp?[back to top]
Please plan to arrive between 9am and 11am for registration though many activities will begin at 10am.

What special activities are planned?[back to top]
After the significant hike into the campsite we will have day hikes, swimming, geocaching (what's this? -- click here), reading a book, games, keeping a journal, survival training, and so much more!

Does my high school sport physical from this year count as my Wilderness Camp Physical?[back to top]
Yes! We require that a physical has been done within the past year for you to participate in the program. If you had one done by your physician for a sport activity earlier this year, that will count. After your phone interview you will be given further information as to where to send this form.

What should I bring to Wilderness Camp?[back to top]
Camp will provide participants with backpacks, tents, cooking equipment, food, toothpaste, low supplies, and shampoo for the week. Each individual participant is still responsible for bringing some of their own personal gear.
